Classic F.C.

Classic FC are a semi-professional soccer team who play in the Kerry District League. They were founded in 2007 and had varied success in thier inagural season.

Early Days

Classic FC began their KDL adventure in September 2007 in a mouth watering away clash with North Kerry side Asdee Rovers. With a 4-1 victory, The Classics got the season off to a dream start. A string of superb performances in the following weeks (with Classics record signing goalkeeper Paul Egan in invincible form) the Tralee side saw themselves climb to the top of Division 2A as well as cruising through the preliminarily rounds of all the major cup competitions.
However, this honeymoon period was about to come to an abrupt end.

At the clubs Christmas party on December 20th 2007, an argument between some of the team’s top players was to have long reaching consequences for the remainder of the season. Rumours spread that Classics No.1 Paul Egan and veteran defender Pat Comerford were no longer on speaking terms.
To add to this star striker Fergal O Sullivan was reported to have been in talks with MLS side New England Revolution about a possible move state side. Although he always denied these talks, the former 19 year old left for Massachusetts in June 2008.

January 2008-Present

The side’s performances began to suffer as a direct result of the above incidents. They began dropping points at home to lesser opposition, absenteeism from training was widespread and the players were potrayed as spoilt overpaid prima donnas. After a shock exit in The Greyhound Cup (a 2-1 defeat to old rivals Asdee Rovers) the club was in a crisis as Paul Egan claimed he could no longer give his best for the club under such media scrutiny. He announced in late May that he would no longer be making himself available for selection in the squad although he did offer to remain on as Director of Football. In the bitter row that followed, in which the 22 year old was accused of feigning injury ahead of away matches (Egan has a fear of road travel), the club terminated his contract at a crucial stage in the season when the Tralee side were still heavily involved in domestic cup competitions.

The consequences were inevitable for the club as they bowed out off all competitions in the following weeks and in a season that had looked very promising they finished with no silverware in the trophy cabinet.
