Charles A. Lewis

Charles Alan Lewis, is an American medical doctor, researcher, author and inventor. He is most widely recognized for his work in the explaining the pathophysiologic mechanisms by which the gastrointestinal immune system promotes systemic inflammation and chronic diseases of distant organs, including many diseases and disorders of the central nervous system. Dr. Lewis and his colleagues were the first researchers to demonstrate the effect of small elevations in serum homocysteine levels, caused by marginal folic acid level, on increasing the risk for coronary artery disease,. This work was sighted by the Institute of Medicine for their recommendations for setting higher levels of folic acid fortification of in processed foods, a change that resulted in a reduced incidence of heart disease, neural tube defects and in some cancers in the United States.
After completing training in epidemiology and receiving board status in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Dr. Lewis worked in research and medicine, mostly in Florida but also as a field epidemiologist and physician in the Dominican Republic. In collaboration with the Scheie Eye Institute and Columbia University Lewis helped identify the cause of a serve form of recessive retinitis pigmentosa, RP-14 as being caused by a mutation in the TULP1 gene,,. Lewis worked in rural medicine for many years, where he was often the only physician in the area. In 2004, Lewis became medical director of a medical device incubator. Here he worked on the development of several devices designed to improve care of respiratory patients including the , a High Flow Therapy device with pressure feedback monitoring and control, and the Trach-Assist.
Prior to attending medical school, Lewis served as a volunteer in the U.S. Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic form 1980 to 1982. His area of work included teaching nutrition to elementary school teachers around the southwest region of the Dominican Republic, sanitation, health and agricultural promotion. He initiated a street project to formalize ownership boundaries in his village, and successfully lobbied for electrification of the village. He, and his fellow Peace Corps volunteers, were recipients of the Beyond War Award in 1987.
