ChallengeYou is an online multiplayer browser-based game-builder and role playing game created by Kevin Manley of Ingenion, Inc. and released in June of 2007. ChallengeYou is based on the aMazer 3D engine, a Shockwave-based engine. It is one of the only fully free-form game builders available that is browser-based. Players can make their own games using the drag-and-drop game editor, and play any of the games created by other users. It is free-to-play, non-violent, and safe for children. Gameplay ChallengeYou games can take a variety of forms. All games have a designated start and finish points, but games can be designed in a linear, race-style format or designed in a more free-form adventure game format similar to MMO worlds. Point of view can be first-person or third-person depending on the player’s preference. Game worlds have no points- or level-based limitations on access or maneuvering, though game designers can use locked doors and keys hidden within the game world to limit access and create narrative. Several items are available on ChallengeYou for designers to use: diamonds, jetpacks (for flying), slingshots (for shooting enemies), keys, locked doors, icemen (moving enemies), ghosts, and UFOs. These items can be inserted anywhere to customize the complexity and difficulty of the game. All games can be played in single or multiplayer mode. In multiplayer mode, each player has his or her own set of items to acquire. Game Building ChallengeYou shares some similarities with other online game-builders such as Roblox and Sploder. It is more full-featured than Sploder, a Flash-based game-builder, but smaller and simpler than Roblox, a download-only game-builder. Currently, of the available free browser-based game-builders available, ChallengeYou is the only one in which users are given full creative control of a 3D world. This capability is generally reserved for download-only game-builders like Roblox. Compatibility The aMazer Shockwave program is compatible with any browser with the Shockwave plug-in. No other additional software is necessary. Community and Membership ChallengeYou has an active community of game designers and players. In-game chat is available in multiplayer mode, and there is a master chatroom on the main site. The site also holds weekly themed game-building contests. ChallengeYou is free to use. To gain full access to the game-builder and the chat, a username and password is required, but an e-mail address is not required. Online Safety ChallengeYou strongly supports efforts to keep kids safe online. ChallengeYou does not permit graphic violence in its games, nor does it permit aggressive or rude behavior by players. Game content and chatrooms are carefully monitored for inappropriate content.
