Allenby 'Allen' Alder (17 January 1918 - 14 April 2008) was a British glass industrialist in Sunderland, United Kingdom. He was the managing partner of the Sunderland-based glass firm Hartley Wood & Sons. Allen's Father, Thomas Alder, was from Longframlington, Northumberland. Allen became a recognized regional cricket player in Whitburn, Sunderland during his youth. Allen was assigned to India as an artillery officer in the British Army during World War II, decorated service for which he earned four medals. Upon his return, he married Joan Kathleen Ashley, daughter of longtime Whitburn school headmaster and Somme survivor, A P Ashley. Allen was a longtime resident of the village of Cleadon for many years and built Hartley Wood from a small Sunderland manufacturer of blown glass into a worldwide hallmark for fine antique stained glass sheets. His legacy in glass is continued in Arkansas in the United States by his son R. Ashley Alder, the inventor and glass engineer as well as his grandson Russell A. Alder, inventor, international glass entrepreneur, and mathematician. Allen's funeral was held on 22 April 2008 at Whitburn Church with his ashes spread across the Whitburn Cricket Pitch of which he was the former captain.
