Carleton Student Engineering Society

The Carleton Student Engineering Society (CSES) is a federally incorporated non-profit society that acts as a fraternity and as student union for the undergraduate engineering students of Carleton University and was founded on March 22, 1979. The engineering society was founded by Paul Barter, Tod Lewis and Steve Oszmian.
Regular
Regular membership is composed of all currently enrolled undergraduate students at Carleton University in a Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) degree program. In 2007, the number of regular members was recorded as 2886.
Alumni
Alumni membership is composed of all who have graduated from Carleton University in a Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) degree and number over 7000.
Some alumni members continue to actively participate in events and activities of the society, but one elite select group of society alumni, the Secret Order of the Purple Panther (SOOPP), actively participates in many major events of the society and serve to guide the culture and instill spirit amongst members of the society.
Objectives
The society was founded with the following objectives:
* To promote professional interest and to foster high standards in the study of Engineering;
* To promote the general interests of the University;
* To culminate the spirit of mutual assistance among its members in the study of the profession<ref name="letterspatent" />.
These objectives have defined the scope of the society's activities and have provided direction and vision for its members and leaders.
The first objective, To promote professional interest and to foster high standards in the study of Engineering, is similar in interest to that of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers and the society often coordinates activities with PEO.
The third objective, To culminate the spirit of mutual assistance among its members in the study of the profession, is similar in interest to that of the Corporation of the Seven Wardens, the group that organizes and officiates the Iron Ring ceremony. The society often works with the Camp #12 secretary of the Corporation of the Seven Wardens to host the Iron Ring ceremony for engineering graduates of Carleton University.
Symbols
Colours
The colours of the society have traditionally been red and black embellished with gold. The head office interior is currently a combination of these colours and white.
The Gong
The Gong, an actual musical instrumental gong, is 36" in diameter and is carried on a black iron stand. It is the official symbol of the society and is used to ceremonially open various major events of the society. It was purchased in the summer of 2006 as mandated by a majority vote of the membership present at the 2006 society annual general meeting. A smaller travel size gong is taken to various conferences by delegations sent by the society to further the symbolism of the gong.
Flightsuits
Flightsuits, though not technically a part of the society, are a part of the engineering culture at Carleton University and are worn by undergraduate engineers who have been shown to be extremely socially involved in the society. The symbol is officiated by the
Flightsuit Committee, a former but no longer official committee of the society. Blue in color with a red patch on the back and various custom patches usually worn elsewhere, the flightsuit is easily recognized as a symbol of Carleton University engineering students at universities across Ontario.
Associates societies
Smaller, more specific smaller engineering societies are organized that cater to specific streams of engineering study. Some of the stream societies that regularly interact with CSES include:
* Carleton Mechanical & Aerospace Society (CMAS)
* Software and Computer Engineering Society (SCESOC)
* IEEE Carleton Student Branch (IEEE)
* Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Carleton Chapter (CSCE)
