Broadlands bridgend

Broadlands Bridgend is a suburb located on the western outskirts of Bridgend, South Wales. The area contains approximately 2500 mainly private housing. According to UpMyStreet, the area profile is of an affluent middle class. However there are a number of single parent and elderly families living on the estate.
Broadlands began in 1998. Prior to 1998, the area was primarily agricultural land belonging to the Merthyr Mawr Estate.

Local Government
The Local MP is Madeline Moon MP (Labour for Bridgend), and the constituency AM is Carwyn Jones (Labour). Regional AM's include Peter Black (Liberal Democrat), Alun Cairns (Conservative) and Bethan Jenkins (Plaid Cymru - Party of Wales). Broadlands is part of the Bryntirion, Laleston & Merthyr Mawr ward, and is represented by Cllr Cheryl Green (Liberal Democrat), Cllr Major Wayne Morgan MBE (Liberal Democrat) and Cllr Tony Beddow (Liberal Democrat). Broadlands lies within the County Borough of Bridgend. Broadlands has its own residents association (with the acronym BRA) currently chaired by Mr. Iwan Dowie. The association is not affiliated to any political party.

Facilities
Broadlands has a primary school (Maes yr Haul) which caters tochildren between the ages of 3 to 11. The school is a feeder school for Bryntirion Comprehensive School, although Brynteg Comprehensive School is nearby.

The Broadlands Retail Centre has numerous shops and eating places, including a Tesco Express, a tapas bar, an Indian Restaurant and takeaway, and an estate agent. The centre is also home to a dental surgery and a hair saloon. Broadlands has one public house (The Llangewydd Arms). A private nursery is also located nearby.

At present the estate does not have a community centre, although Maes yr Haul school is used for many commnuity based events, including some adult education classes.

Religion
There is one permanent church on the estate (The Church of Latter Day Saints - Mormon) which has a distinctive spire and is located to the south of the estate. Recently the Broadlands Evangelical Church has based itself in the Wales Evangelical Theological College in Bryntirion on the outskirts of the estate. Non-Christian faiths are presently not represented on the estate.

Transport
There are only two vehicular entrances/exits to the estate. This has led to a lot of congestion during the rush hours. A local bus service provides public transport to the estate. The nearest train facilities is located in Bridgend Town Centre (approximately two miles away).

Current Developments
Persimmon Homes (Wales) has outline planning permission for a further 250 homes upon the estate. More recently the mobile phone firm O2 has outlines plans for a mobile phone mast near to the school, which is already attracting considerable opposition. Residents also complain of poor landscaping partly due to large areas of developed land awaiting local council adoption. A bike path along the A48 to Brynteg Comprehensive School remains unfinished due to a lack of funds.

In November 2007 the Broadlands Residents Association won the Tidy Wales Week event, highlighting the importance of cleaning up your litter. The event led to an increase in the number of litter bins on the estate.

Famous Residents
Famous people who live or have lived on the Broadlands Estate include Mike Doyle (Welsh Comedian), Lee Byrne (Welsh Rugby International and Ospreys star).
