Malay Britons or British Malays make up a part of overseas Malay population. Malays who came to the United Kingdom are mainly from Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, South Africa and Sri Lanka. As these immigrants came from former British colonies, they have been in the United Kingdom since British colonial rule, and mainly came to the nation to further their studies in institutions of higher learning. These Malays came from different ethnic groups but it is their Malay cultural assimilation and their religion Islam that unites them together as ethnic Malays. Many royal and aristrocrat Malay families have sent their children to study in one of the top universities in United Kingdom, and one of them was Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Malaysian Prime Minister.
