Brian McHattie

Brian McHattie is an urban planner and has served as a Hamilton City Councillor for Ward One (Chedoke-Cootes) since 2003.
Early Life
McHattie was born in Weston, Ontario and, in 1987, moved to Hamilton, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in environmental studies and went on to complete his MSc degree in rural planning and community development from the University of Guelph, where he studied the effects of globalisation on farmers in southern India. He is a Registered Professional Planner and a member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planning.
Prior to his election to Hamilton City Council, McHattie was completing his PhD in planning, investigating the issue of limits to growth in North American municipalities. Professionally, McHattie worked for Environment Canada on efforts to clean up the Great Lakes, with Environment Hamilton as the regional coordinator for the Canadian Community Monitoring Network, with the Hamilton Conservation Authority and the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC). McHattie was also employed as a sessional lecturer at McMaster University in the Arts and Science Program.
Hamilton Mayoral Election, 1997
As an early foray into the municipal political scene in Hamilton, McHattie stood for Mayor in 1997. Running on an environmentally-conscious platform that promoted practical spending, opening an inquiry into the Plastimet disaster, improving municipal air quality, and upgrading the city's sewer system, McHattie placed fourth behind incumbent mayor Bob Morrow.
Hamilton City Council
McHattie was first elected as Ward One Councillor in 2003 with 57.94% of the vote. He was easily re-elected in 2006 with 62.88% of the vote over closest rival, Tony Greco. He was re-elected for a third term in 2010 with 64.90% of the vote.
McHattie falls to the centre-left among members of Hamilton City Council, voting in favour of smart growth, neighbourhood renewal, participatory budgeting and local economic development.
During his time on council, McHattie served as the President of the Hamilton Conservation Authority and CityHousing Hamilton. In addition, he was a Board member of the Hamilton Future Fund, Hamilton Renewable Power Inc., and the Royal Botanical Gardens. As Ward One's councillor, McHattie chaired several municipal committees including the Hamilton Association of Business Improvement Areas, the Provincial Gas Tax Steering Committee, the City of Hamilton/Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Liaison Committee, the Hamilton Triple Bottom Line Business Criteria Task Force, and the Social Services Downloading Sub-Committee. He is also an active member of the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction, the Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council and Arts Hamilton.
Hamilton Mayoral Election, 2014
McHattie announced his intent to run for Mayor on September 30, 2013and he was the first to officially enter the Mayoral race, registering his candidacy on January 2, 2014.
On January 28, 2014, McHattie launched his campaign in front of 400 supporters at a rally at LIUNA Station.During that event, McHattie spoke about his campaign's central themes, namely stronger neighbourhoods, smarter growth, more open government, a healthier environment and more jobs.
