Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway

Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway (formerly MS 150, MS Bike Tour, and MS Bike Ride) is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, National Capital Chapter’s charity bicycle ride. Part of the Bike MS series of bicycle rides, event participants ride anywhere from 30 to 150 miles across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area over one or two days. The event raises money for research, programs, and other services supported by the National MS Society.
Cyclists
Each cyclist pays a registration fee and commits to a fundraising minimum to benefit the National MS Society. Anyone from beginner to advanced cyclists can participate by crafting their own ride to their individual needs and experiences. Cyclists must be over the age of 12 and are supported by staff and volunteers with rest stops, bike mechanics, medics, support and gear wagons, and motorcycle escorts. Cyclists are also given fundraising assistance, tips, and strategies prior to the event.
Teams
An official team is made up of four or more cyclists, each of whom commit to meeting the fundraising minimum. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, teams have more fun and raise more money. Groups of friends, coworkers, and/or relatives form teams and can be involved with Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway by sponsoring a rest stop. The National MS Society supports Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway teams through the Team Captain’s Kit, team sign-up days, one-on-one consultations with team representatives, and extensive communication. Volunteers are also able to be on teams.
Volunteers
Volunteers play a large role in the success of Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway. Volunteers serve in a variety of functions and are even able to raise money as well. Volunteers may serve for part of the day, the whole day, or the whole weekend. Volunteers assist with set-up logistics, communication, support, and many other aspects of the event.
Crew and Super Spokes
Crew members volunteer for the entire weekend, assisting in logistical support for the duration of the weekend. Super Spokes members also offer their services for the entire weekend and commit to meeting the fundraising minimum.
