BigTent provides online discussion boards and membership software to groups. BigTent was acquired by Federated Media in October 2010, and continues to operate according to a freemium model. Quantcast estimates that BigTent receives between 800,000 and 900,000 visits each month.
Examples of prominent BigTent groups include FlyLady and Manic Mommies.
History
BigTent was founded in 2006 and had raised $5 million in funding as of January 2008. The site announced its public launch in October 2008.
BigTent was co-founded by Nicholas Chim and Laney Whitcanack, the latter of whom is a social entrepreneur with experience running non-profits aimed at women and girls. As the BigTent audience also grew to focus on women's communities, a potential partnership with publishing company Federated Media ripened into an acquisition offer.
