Bhanu Prakash Sharma

Bhanu Prakash Sharma (1916 - 1996) was an Indian jurist and educator, he was born in the city of Churu, Rajasthan. He received a scholarship to pursue studies for a law degree and graduated with a Bachelor of Law (LL.B) degree from Banaras Hindu University, worked as a jurist in Rajasthan and was then appointed Professor of Law to instruct incoming officers for the Indian Administrative Service.
Upon graduation, he entered the Bikaner State Judicial Service by serving as a Munsiff (magistrate) in Sujangarh. After India’s independence, he continued in the Rajasthan State Judicial Service serving as a Civil Judge and later as an Additional Sessions Judge. He retired as District/Sessions Judge in 1971.
As a mentor
A large number of lawyers from Rajasthan trained under Bhanu Prakash Sharma and went on to have successful careers of their own. Prominent names include Milap Chand Jain who headed the inquiry commission into the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and Jasraj Chopra who became a Rajasthan High Court Justice.
Career as educator
Following retirement from the Rajasthan Judicial Service, Bhanu Prakash Sharma served from 1971 to 1973 as Professor of Law at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. From 1973 to 1981 he served as Course Director at the Harishchandra Mathur Rajasthan State Institute of Public Administration, Jaipur. In this capacity he trained the incoming cadre of officers for the Rajasthan Administrative Service, Rajasthan Police Service, Rajasthan Accounts Service, Rajasthan Judicial Service and Indian Administrative Service officers designated to serve in Rajasthan.
