Betty Barratt

Elizabeth Barratt better known as Betty Barratt was the Mayor of High Wycombe from 1984-1985 and the Chairman of Buckinghamshire council from 1996 to 1997 she is part of the famous Barratt Family. Born in 1929 she will be 80 in August 2009. She is regarded as one of the most successful Mayors of High Wycombe of all time.
Mayor
Betty was elected mayor in 1984 and achieved a great deal during her term in office. She opened many new buildings and helped improve the health service. She also helped create more housing projects in the outer suburbs of Wycombe. The Barratt family was very active during her time. They all contributed much to the town of Wycombe.
Chairman
Betty served as Chairman of High Wycombe from 1996 to 1997. She attend various events and contributed again a lot to this time the county of Buckinghamshire.
After Politics
Betty herself today up until 2008 is still highly involved with activities within the council and still sits in the chamber once in a while, though recently she has been unwell. Betty is still also when well much involved with the Wycombe District Council and keeps in contact with all Mayors who have succeeded her. Betty still attends various events at 10 Downing Street when she is well enough. Since leaving office she has been a keen participant of New Labour. She still keeps in contact through letters with the Home Secretary. She has sometimes been regarded as crazy as Betty is known for not being able to stay in a room on her own for over ten minutes without having someone to chat to!
Awards
Betty Barratt has won several awards for her contribution to the town of High Wycombe and also to the county of Buckinghamshire. She was appointed an honorary burgess of the town in the early 2000s. She has also been awarded an MBE for her service to her country.
Birthday
It is tradition that Betty's birthday is the most important day of the entire year. The Birthday ceremonies start being planned about a month in advance. A spectacular event is scheduled to take place this year for her 80th
Portrait
Her portrait hangs in the main hall of High Wycombe council. There is another portrait that is located in the south of England. This portrait is set to be restored in the near future. The portrait is of Betty In her mayor’s robes sitting in the mayor’s office in High Wycombe council chamber.
