Ben Birillo

Ben Birillo (1928-2020) is an American visual artist, curator, and art collector.
In 1964 at the Paul Bianch gallery on Manhattan's Upper East Side Birillo curated what as generally held as being the first exhibition of "PopArt" "American Supermarket" featuring the of Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselman, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Richard Artschwager, Billy Apple, and Robert Watrs.
As a painter though he was a contepmopary of many of the major Pop artists he saw himself as not belonging to any particular school of art, On the subject he stated..."“No—I’m just an artist. I don’t belong to any school. I just create art. It’s my life. My life is my art. I don’ref>t understand anything else..."
In later years Birillo showed works from his "Spirit Dogs" series at the Georges Bergès gallery in the SoHo section of Manhattan.
