Beerathon is a drinking event which starts at a specific time and ends exactly 24 hours later. The premise of the event is to drink 24 beers before the 24 hour deadline. A Beerathon usually begins in the late morning at 10:00 a.m. to prevent contestants from sleeping through the night and waking to finish. Inception Beerathon was first conceived at 51 Knox Circle, Huntsville, Tx by a group of brothers of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In December 2004, Andrew Anderson, with the help of his roommates Jess Koy and Nick Savarino, laid out ground rules. There were five contestants in the first Beerathon and only two completed the event. Rules * All contestants' beer cans must be marked by the judges prior to beginning the event. * Accountability must be maintained of all empty beer cans to prove the number of beers consumed. * Beer must be consumed within the general viewing of other contestants. * If a contestant vomits, he or she shall incur a three beer penalty. * If a contestant spills a beer, no matter how full, that beer shall not count. * If one contestant spills another contestant's beer, the spiller shall incur a one beer penalty. * The first to finish 24 beers within the allotted 24 hours will be the winner. However, for each beer over 24 consumed, 10 minutes shall be subtracted from that contestants finish time. Event The beerathon is held every year in the December/January time-frame. Since 2004, many unofficial Beerathons have taken place at multiple locations, hosted by different parties at different times. The rules of these events are usually similar to those of the original event. However, the core group of creators and participants still host the official Beerathon at locations to be determined each year.
