Futurecon is a New Year's Eve science fiction convention held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and sponsored by Liana K, Ed the Sock, and their affiliated company Kerzner MediaArts. The first convention will take place on December 30, 2010 to January 1, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Markham in Toronto. Unlike other Toronto conventions, Futurecon is being promoted as a relaxation convention (or relaxacon), meaning that the focus is on socialization rather than consumerism. As the convention is meant to be a prolonged New Year's party, it is time-travel themed. Events of the convention include comedic entertainment by Gavin Stephens, book launches by Toronto authors Derwin Mak and JM Frey, a pool party, a traditional count down for NYE, and a recreation of the Enchantment Under the Sea dance from Back to the Future. As a non-profit event, the convention is fundraising for Epilepsy Toronto. Attendees While there are no scheduled autograph or meet and greet sessions, attendees will include notable persons like Lar DeSouza of Least I Could Do, sci-fi authors like Robert J. Sawyer, and many other Toronto personalities.
