BASIK (Build a School in Kenya) is a registered charity established on 22 November 2006, following a visit to Kenya in the summer of that year. Founded in Ben Rhydding, West Yorkshire, it is now based in Burley in Wharfedale. Fundraising takes place all over the UK. BASIK aims to establish and run primary and secondary schools in Mombassa, Kenya. The schools will benefit children in all areas of education and sport from the age of 5-18. The long term vision of BASIK is to provide poor children with the opportunity of a brighter future and to tackle poverty. The registered charity number is 1116936. Fundraising Initially, the main method of fundraising was through informal football matches at St. Mary's Catholic High School, Menston. However, since then, fundraising efforts have increased to include an annual Flag day in the local town of Ilkley, sponsored bike rides, sponsored runs and selling Kenyan art and bracelets. In 2008 David Eastwood, a founding member of BASIK, completed the Great North Run in aid of the charity. In September 2011, BASIK celebrated its 5th Anniversary with a fundraising party at the Ilkley Vaults. Over £1500 was raised. In total, the 2011 financial year brought an income of £9,421, almost double that of the previous year.
