Basal leaf

A basal leaf grows from the very bottom of a stem. Basal refers to the base of a structure. Basal leaves are often different in size and shape from leaves that grow on the upright flowering stem.
The basal leaf is used to distinguish between plant species. Some plants grow only basal leaves, such as Achlys triphylla which has its leaves come up from rhizomes. Calochortus tolmiei usually grows just one basal leaf and usually has no other leaves except a small one on the flower stem.
The period of early primordium growth in monocotyledons is followed by the establishement of a basal leaf meristem.
