Lieutenant Commander Barry T. Cooke was a U.S. Naval Aviator who was shot down and killed during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. A native of Austin, Texas, LCDR Cooke was a 1973 graduate of A.N. McCallum High School and was an A-6 Intruder pilot assigned to Attack Squadron 36 aboard the when on February 2, 1991 his plane was struck by enemy fire. Both he and his co-pilot, LT Patrick Connor, were killed. It was not until May 1991 however that the Navy knew whether or not the two pilots had been killed or captured. LCDR Cooke had been stationed at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia and left behind a wife and three young children. His remains were never recovered and he is memoralized with a cenotaph in Arlington National Cemetery.
