Barry Burkhill

Barry Edward Burkhill (born 1939) is a councillor for Handforth Parish Council, a representative of the Handforth Ratepayers' Association (Independent) on Cheshire East Council since 2011, and Mayor of Cheshire East since 2019. He has represented the town of Handforth for 39 years.
Political career
Macclesfield Borough Council
Burkhill represented Handforth, a small town in north-west England, on Macclesfield Borough Council from 1979 until the authority was abolished in 2009, and represented the old borough as mayor in 2007. and in 2019. The roles of mayor and deputy (Deputy Mayor: Steven Edgar, Conservative member for Haslington) are apolitical, carrying out civic duties on behalf of the council and residents of the borough. The mayor chairs meetings of the council and can use their casting vote, if required to do so.
Handforth Parish Council
Burkhill was elected to Handforth Parish Council to represent the South ward in 2019.
In 2021, a December 2020 Zoom videoconference which he attended went viral worldwide, in which he was perceived as being rude and disrespectful to Jackie Weaver, Chief Officer of the Cheshire Association of Local Councils (ChALC), saying: "you don't know what you're talking about". Burkhill was subsequently ejected from the meeting by Weaver and is currently facing a vote of no confidence from Conservative councillor Liz Wardlaw:
Personal life
Burkhill was born in Cheshire in 1939 and married Susan Bidwell in 2004.<ref name="Winsford"/>
