The first Baron de Wael, was Sijmon de Wael, who was born in Watergang of the City of Landsmeer, North of the Netherlands, in 1702. He was the son of Claas de Wael (1671-1713) and Maritje Jannevaers (1680-1706). The de Wael family was already, in old times, landowners in Watergang and Monnickendam (North Netherlands). His ancestors Claas Cornelisz de Wael Buysman in the 17th century was one of the richest families and were Lord mayors of Landsmeer for several generations. His great-grand father Pieter Claes Buyes, was one of the co-founders of New Amsterdam (New York) and had large land properties in New Utrecht (Long Island) Simon de Wael was not only a large land owner but also active in politics and an active member of the protestant church in those days. He was member of "Het Vroedschap", "Heemraad" en "Schepen"; controlling the local tax and infrastructural spending, like canals etc. He was also "Kerkmeester"; an important position in the protestant Church, collecting the church tax from the local citizens, and preacher. When Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor (1685-1740), Archduke of Austria, King of Bohemia, Croatia and Hungary became ruler in 1713, of the Southern Netherlands (zuidelijke Nederlanden), afterwards called Austrian Netherlands (oostenrijkse Nederlanden, 1713-1795), through the peace treaty of Utrecht (vrede van Utrecht-1713), Karl VI of the House of Habsburg, was looking for political alliances in the North of the Netherlands. Sijmon de Wael, as an influential political figure, therefore was appointed by Emperor Karl VI in order to have alliances in the Province of North Holland (Watergang-Landsmeer-Monnickendam) as political advisor. In the year 1739 Sijmon de Wael was given by "patent brief" as baron de Wael (1st of August 1739), and all male descendants to come were entitled to bear this title of baron.
