Badidas University Newcastle

Badidas University Newcastle is a fictional public research university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England. It was established in 2013 by People & Planet activists to caricerture the University of Newcastle. Newcastle University which is a member of the Russell Group entered into a controversial two-year agreement with major sports wear producer Adidas in order to boost its’ reputation in sports. This deal however created anger amongst students over the ‘hushed up’ nature of the negotiations and the reputation of Adidas with regards to workers’ rights.
This action formed part of a wider campaign around the PT Kizone factory in Indonesian where Adidas has received criticism over treatment of workers. They produced products for Adidas as well as Nike and the Dallas Cowboys until they closed in January 2011. Laid off were 2,686 workers, who are owed $3 million in severance pay and benefits. Nike has contributed $1.5 million but Adidas has not acted. A campaign has been initiated by United Students Against Sweatshops calling for universities to cut contracts with Adidas.
