The Astronomical Society of New South Wales (commonly referred to as ASNSW) is a not-for-profit organisation catering for all those interested in astronomy, including both amateur and professional astronomers. It is the largest astronomy society in New South Wales, and currently has over 450 members. The society publishes the monthly periodical, Universe. History An organisation known as the Sydney Amateur Astronomers was started in 1954, but was renamed The Astronomical Society of New South Wales in 1964. In 1985 it was incorporated under The Associations Incorporation Act. The ASNSW's annual "Star Party", which has run for 17 years near Ilford, New South Wales has been cited as the largest astronomical event in Australia. Goals Its goals are to * bring together people interested in Astronomy and related sciences, * to promote public interest and education in Astronomy * provide Astronomical observing facilities for members, * provide educational lectures for members and the public, * assist members and the public to select, use and construct astronomical instruments. Meetings There are two meetings per month, at the Epping Creative Centre, on those Friday evenings closest to Full Moon. Meetings start at 7.45pm for 8:00pm.
