Gameplay
Assassin Blue features gameplay not far from a classic action platformer. The player must travel through large levels using sword attacks to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. The game has been especially praised for its boss battles, which feature Quick Time Event finisher moves. There are 12 total levels in the game's main campaign, but by hitting hidden targets and spending them like currency in the game's shop, the player can access a bonus Boss Rush mode in which each boss is fought one after the the other.
Plot Overview
The game's plot revolves Blue, a trained killer whose job is to infiltrate and take out various targets as picked by his boss. Early on, after taking care of one of his targets, Blue discovers that he is not the only assassin working for his boss's enterprise; Red, another assassin of unknown origins, carries an identical responsibility to Blue's. Out of concern for the outcome of his next task, the boss orders the pair of them to carry out the mission cooperatively. Neither Blue nor Red are pleased by their bosses decision, but follow through with the mission anyway. When the target is taken out, Blue sees the mission as complete; Red, however, does not see his job as done decides to follow through and murder the target's immediate family as well. Blue, outraged, returns to headquarters for briefing on his next mission. The boss, after hearing Red's full report, begins to lose faith in Blue and sends him on a mission solely to test his loyalty. Upon reaching his destination, he learns the truth about his organization and vows to end it. Blue sets out on a personal vendetta, seeking to kill the Boss and Red.
Setting
Although the time period is never specifically mentioned in-game, the weaponry (swords, maces) and setting (castles, dungeons) suggest a medieval time period, most likely in eastern Europe (although a couple levels take place in a desert setting, the most prevalent location is in or around a stormy hamlet). There is also, however, the use of grenades, which leads to believe the game takes place in a fictional mix between medieval and modern times.
Cast
Blue
The person after which the game is named, he is the main focus of the plot of Assassin Blue. Blue has been fighting since a young age and very little shakes him. He is often referred to as arrogant and overconfident, and his personality and speech reflect these traits. Regardless of his soulless exterior, he has a healthy set of morals that keep him taking the path he believes is right.
Red
A rival assassin of Blue's working for the same organization, led by the boss. Has no illusions about the work that he does, and dutifully follows through on his responsibilities without letting ethics get in the way. Doesn't think Blue takes his job seriously enough; once remarks sarcastically on Blue's choice to wear a cape.
The Boss
Never given a formal name or even a glimpse at his face, Red and Blue's boss is always hiding in the shadows giving orders to the pair of them. As removed as he is from the locales of the missions he sends them on, nothing escapes his notice. He is killed by an enraged Blue in one of the final scenes of the game.
Reception
