Arushi Talwar (May 24, 1993 - May 15, 2008) was a 14 year daughter of a dentist couple, found dead with her throat slit in the bedroom of her house in Jal Vayu Vihar in Noida, Uttar Pradesh on May 15, 2008. On May 16 2008, the Noida Police was informed about the murder. Arushi Talwar's father Dr. Rajesh Talwar expressed suspicion over their servant/domestic help Hemraj, who according to parents was missing after the incident. On parents tip Noida Police announced a reward and a police party was dispatched to find him in his hometown in Nepal.
After performing the post-mortem parents took the ashes on the second day to Haridwar to perform Asthi Visarjan. A retired Noida Police officer visiting the crime scene found blood on the foot steps leading to the terrace, he informed the Noida police. Noida police found 45 year old maid servant Hemraj's body on the terrace. On May 23 2008 Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar was arrested for twin murders. Nupur Talwar accused the Noida police for framing Rajesh Talwar and requested Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to transfer the case to the CBI.
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Sunday began investigations into the murders of 14-year-old Aarushi and her domestic help Hemraj in Noida last month and formed a 25-member team in a bid to crack the case. No sooner than Central Bureau of Investigation moved in to take over the Aarushi murder case on Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati promptly gave transfer orders to senior police officers Noida Senior Superintendent of Police Satish Ganesh, Meerut range deputy inspector general of police and Meerut Inspector General Gurdarshan Singh, all being closely connected with the investigations.
Significance of the case The case has received significant national attention, and has become representative for some of what they believe are recent tendencies towards sensationalism in the Indian media; accusations of "overkill" and "media-run trials" have been made. Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury has come down heavily on the police for what she called "character assassination" of child victims; she has called for a commission to investigate whether legislation to enforce this is required. The focus by 24-hour cable news on details of supposed "double affairs" conducted by father and daughter, and the "media frenzy" that has compromised the privacy of involved families has caused comparisons to be made to the JonBenet Ramsey case in the United States.
