Arnold Jacobi

Arnold Jacobi was a Los Angeles, California, merchant who was a member of the Los Angeles Common Council in 1853-54. He was one of eight Jews listed as living in that city in the first U.S. census of 1850. Jacobi was born around in 1813 or 1816 in Prussia and arrived in New York City aboard the George Washington on November 7, 1849. He moved to California from New York State, according to the California State Census of 1852. Jacobi organized the Los Angeles firm of Jacobi and Michaels, or Michael, with Moritz Michael. He was secretary of Los Angeles's first Freemasons lodge and was considered to be an "expert violinist." |
