Archbishop Alexy

Archbishop Alexy (born Alexy Bondarenko; August 6, 1967 in Kiev, Ukraine) is the head of the Russian True Orthodox Church. He holds the titles Metropolitan of Moscow and All-Russia, First Hierarch of the Russian True Orthodox Church - Moscow Archdiocese, and President of the Synod and the Council of Bishops.
Alexy was raised in the . He joined the Russian True Orthodox Church as an adult.<ref name="alexy"/> He was tonsured in 1998.<ref name="alexy"/>
On February 2, 2003, Alexy was consecrated a bishop with the title Bishop of Pavlovsky Posad; the ordaining prelates were Metropolitan Vyacheslav (Lisovoy) and Bishop Michael (Wisniewski) of Bronnitsky and Velinsky.<ref name="alexy"/> Later he was given the title Bishop of Chicago and North America.<ref name="alexy"/> On March 27, 2005, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop, and in April 2005 he received the title Archbishop of Minneapolis and Chicago.<ref name="alexy"/>
After the death of Metropolitan Vyacheslav in May 2011 Alexy was elected locum tenens of Moscow.<ref name="alexy"/> He was subsequently elected metropolitan.<ref name="episcopate"/>
