April Alisa Marquette is an American author of contemporary women’s fiction, romance novels, and non-fiction. Biography Marquette was born and raised in New York, the eldest of three children. She attributes her love of reading to her mother, who read, sang, or quoted poetry to her children on most evenings. She attributes her research and writing skills to her father, a pastor. She has been creating stories since she learned to write, and took creative writing and literature electives while seeking her business degree. Her fiction has been called captivating, emotionally-jolting, powerfully erotic, and thought-provoking. Her non-fiction has been called empowering, educational and entertaining. Most of her fiction contains protagonists who are sexy, savvy African-American women. Although the book Exodus contains historical elements, the majority of her novels are contemporary life stories. Marquette says of her captivating works, which are often catalogued under general or women's fiction, “If it happens in real life, it happens in the lives of my characters.” All of her works revolve around family, friends, lovers, and the drama that surrounds them. Most are set in the states. They take place in hamlets like the sleepy little town of Tranquility, New York. She created it for her series The Tranquility Tales. Stories in her Sea Isles Series take place on the ‘little known’ but picturesque islands of Karina Cay and Miraunga Isle. These fictitious islands of Marquette’s were inspired by her knowledge of the U.S. Golden Isles. When asked why she chose writing as a career, her answer is simple. She wanted to offer readers a world in which they might become immersed, with characters that are often as familiar as family. Fresh out of college, she worked at publishing houses and magazine distributors. Before becoming a full time author, Marquette also worked on Wall Street, for one of America’s most recognizable real estate tycoons. At a New York law firm she held the title of Depositions Coordinator. From 2009 through 2012 she was the editor of the Ethnic Beauty site at BellaOnline.com where each week, she wrote a column designed to empower readers. Once a tutor, she also taught teen and young adult classes at Sunday school. For years, she was the Youth Leader at her church. Currently a motivational speaker, she literally brightens a room with her presence. When concluding a speech, she leaves audiences feeling uplifted as well as inspired. As an independent publisher, blogger Marquette has published and collaborated with other authors. After reading her, a fellow writer penned the following; is in tune with the pulse of her readers and is proficient in the art of conversational writing. She has the unique ability to make readers feel as though she speaks directly to them. When asked if her plate is full, she only smiles and says she feels energized because she is doing what she was born to do.
