Animals on the Underground

Animals on the Underground is a collection of over 20 animal characters made using only lines, stations and interchange symbols on the London Underground map, created by illustrator Paul Middlewick in 1987. In 2003, the concept was used in a poster campaign by advertising agency McCann-Erickson to promote the London Zoo. They have also appeared on London Television and in press articles around the world including The Daily Mail and The Guardian.
The ran a fund raising poster campaign on the London Underground in April 2008. The posters used the Seal, Elephant and Whale images to raise awareness of seal hunting in Canada, the ivory trade and whale hunting respectively.
The Animals have also appeared many times in London's Metro newspaper and is regularly featured on blog sites around the world. Animals on the Underground concept and images are copyright protected and uses the London Underground map, symbol and typeface under license.
On 2 December 2008 the Animals on the Underground name and designs were registered as a Trade Mark (No. 250381)
In 2010, Animals on the Underground were joined by Jon Sayers and, together with the founding partners; Paul Middlewick and Nick Thomas, formed Animals on the Underground Limited (registered in England number 6812253).
Storybook 'Lost Property' published
On 20 May 2010, Lost Property, the first in a series of storybooks aimed at children from age 8 upwards. The book is illustrated by Paul Middlewick, the originator of the Animals concept, and written by Jon Sayers. It is the story of a helpful little elephant called ‘Elephant & Castle’ or ‘Elephant’ for short. When he tries to find things for others, all he finds is that he’s lost his memory! That is until his friend Angel, the angel fish, splashes to the rescue! Sometimes even the most helpful of us need a bit of help from our friends...
The official launch took place at London's Transport Museum on 4 July 2010 and Lost Property (ISBN 978-0-9557619-1-1, price £7.99) is now available in Foyles bookshops, Daunt Books and several branches of Waterstones as well as Amazon online and on the Animals on the Underground web site.

Altogether there's a total of 38 variations. All the designs use the same version of the tube map.
