Andrew McNeile Jones

Andrew McNeile Jones (born 1961) is a British contemporary painter and former television producer. He is best known for figurative and photorealistic paintings of closely-observed interiors and still life paintings.
Education and film career (1979-2002)
McNeile Jones was born in Oxford in Oxfordshire, England, where he still lives. He has an undergraduate degree from Oxford University.
Andrew McNeile Jones subsequently trained and worked in several film departments, including lighting, set design and editing. He became specialised in television and cinema commercials and worked as a freelance director and producer on some dramas and documentaries. His television productions won several awards, including two British Academy Television Awards and a BAFTA.
Art career (2003-present)
In 2002, McNeile Jones decided to leave the film industry in order to be able to concentrate on his art.
McNeile Jones has exhibited regularly since 2003. He had permanent exhibitions in London (at the Enid Lawson Gallery and the Go Figurative Gallery) and the Cotswolds region (Art Gallery in Tetbury). In France, his works are showed at the Galerie Anagama in Versailles. In September 2011, he had his first solo show in London, 'Silent Light', organised through Go Figurative. His work can be seen regularly during art fairs in the United Kingdom and several European countries, including Italy, Belgium and The Netherlands.
He has been commissioned to produce paintings for Harrods, which now feature on some of their packaging. Some of his paintings have been published in newspapers and lifestyle magazines, including The Independent and Vogue.
In 2017, McNeile Jones started developing a new body of work that is more semi-figurative in nature, gestural, using found imagery as a source for more emotional, thought provoking paintings.
Style
His compositions are inspired by his time in the film business in the 1980s and 90s. McNeile Jones’ paintings usually reflect a cool, almost melancholy atmosphere. His work aims to capture a certain atmosphere in a moment of light and shadow and reflection. Sometimes he hints at an off-stage narrative. The subject matter of his work ranges from domestic interiors glimpsed through doorways and shutter and still lives, lit by raking sunlight, to occasional exteriors caught in the first or last light. His style is often figurative and detailed, without being overly photoreal.
McNeile Jones' works are photographic, but are not created by reproducing a photo. His studio, in North Hinksey Village, is full of clothes, fruits and flowers that he paints in oils. He begins a painting with found images that have meaning for him and evoke memories. McNeile Jones works often on oil sketches to develop the composition, sometimes drawing various ideas together, or by simplifying an idea. The work evolves as McNeile Jones paints over areas or scrapes away the paint; some areas are detailed and others heightened with paint splattered, sprayed or thrown at the canvas.
