His Father wanted him to become an Architect, thus was his original direction of study. He completed High School leaving level in 1972 in England achieving the following grades: “Technical Drawing- Grade 1/ Excellent, Math- Grade 1/ Excellent, Chemistry- Grade 1/ Excellent, English- Grade 1/ Excellent.” After leaving School Andrew attended Brooklyn College, he ultimately became disenchanted with the course content and felt the need to follow a more adventurous path. In 1974 aged 19, Andrew immigrated to Australia on his own. Once established and after completing further education and training, he held the position of General Manager for close to 20 years. Key focus was in the creative field of consumer goods product marketing and advertising with national and international clients. Traditional art and architectural detail continues to contribute to my own style. In many of my paintings I attempt to reinterpret abstracts of images that I have enjoyed or found attractive, even if it relates to just a minute piece of a certain shade of blue. My philosophy is to be satisfied with and enjoy each individual painting that I create, resulting in pieces of art that hopefully other people will continue to enjoy. I admire the work of several artists and over the last twenty or so years have attempted to study and understand the foundations of individual styles, ideas and techniques. I openly acknowledge the following artists and designers whose works I have found inspiring or enjoy in some way shape or form: (In no particular order) Sidney Nolan, Gustav Klimt, Drexel Jacobson, Victor Schrekengost, Vladimir Bobritsky, Emil Bisttram,Victor Brauner, Adolph Gottlieb, Juan Gris, George Grosz, Enrich Heckel, Auguste Herbin, Alex von Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, Kasimir Malevich, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Liubov Popova, Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Max Weber, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Ferdinand Leger, Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Bala, Jean Dubuffet, Vladimir Tatlin, Kurt Schwitters, Marc Chagall and Max Ernst”. From 1976 to 2002, Andrew created a wide variety of art pieces in his spare time. During this period, Andrew also completed several educational courses, which included the design and making of leadlight windows under the direction of Colin Montford., Woodwork, Metalwork/Welding and Pottery at TAFE. In addition, paintings completed in this period included portrait, Figurative, still life, landscape, and abstract in a variety of mediums. He also designed and made many lead light windows and some aspects of leadlight/stained glass window design are evident in some of his current paintings. More recently, Andrew has studied Orthodox Byzantine Iconography at Luke’s School of Iconography, Monastery of St. John of the Mountain. With support and encouragement from many individuals, he made painting his full time occupation in 2003. Andrew’s work has been widely exhibited since 2004. His Images are in collections in Australia, U.S.A., Canada, England, Japan, and Italy. Recent purchasers of note have included The City of Stirling, and Mr. Joe and Mrs. Lisa Scaffidi (The Lord Mayor of Perth). Andrew lives with his family in South Yunderup but normally paints several days a week at his studio/gallery in East Perth. He usually works with beautiful music and a pet Labrador, Delta in the background. ‘‘Images developed from my surroundings, past and present frequently feature in my works. My paintings are uplifting by design and often contain personalized symbols intended to promote a sensation of well being to the viewer. I often create a montage of my images to illustrate a particular story, message or profession. As I work on each composition, my goal is to create a meaningful and entertaining painting with a fine balance between bold colour and fascinating image that is pleasing to the eye and stimulates the curiosity of the viewer. I choose to constantly experiment with my ideas and technique’’.
