Andayil

Andayil is one of the oldest Nair families of Kerala. It has its origins in the tiny village of Peruvamba in the Palakkad district of Kerala, South India.
There are around 500 members (approx.) in the Andayil family. It is a close knit family, where members are close to each other and meet regularly.
In the olden days most of the family members of the Andayil tharavadu used to stay in an Ettuketu. A temple is present in every traditional Ettuketu or Naaluketu. As years went by, lifestyles changed. The joint families became nuclear. The Ettuketu of the Andayil tharavadu was partitioned, except the temple. The temple that was part of the ancient Ettuketu is still intact. Every year the family members of Andayil meetup at this ancient tharavdu temple.
Pooja Celebrations
The pooja celebrations of the andayil temple are very popular in Peruvamba. Every year poojas are conducted and it is attended by most of the family members at the Andayil temple in Peruvamba village. The celebrations last for a few days. The most prominent feature of the celebrations are Kalam poojas and urayal. Urayal is an traditional ritual where some members in the family dance to the tunes of Pulluvan pattu in sheer ecstasy. And during these moments they are treated like Gods. The or the family deity temple of the Andayil family is in Ilayakavu, near Kodumbu village. The final pooja ends at Ilayakavu every year. The pooja celebrations bring all the members of the family under one roof.
