Amruss is a fictional, algae-based food supplement postulated in Leo Szilard's 1961 short story, The Voice of the Dolphins. In the story, the development of Amruss leads to marked improvement in worldwide nutrition, but as an unintended side effect it also suppresses women's fertility, aiding in halting uncontrolled population growth in undeveloped nations. Although initially opposed by the Catholic Church as a contraceptive, the Church eventually reverses itself based on its superior value as a food supplement.
Although fictional, Amruss bears a striking resemblance to spirulina, without the contraceptive quality.
