Amir Kalan

Amir Kalan was Amir Kulal’s grandson and Ulugh Beg’s teacher. Amir Kalan was renowned for his religious and scientific scholarship. Entrusted with the education of the young prince, he not only taught him the religious fundamentals but also introduced him to the subjects of mathematics and astronomy. Ulugh Beg is regarded by the Kulal family to be a true student as he followed both the morality and sciences taught by his teacher. In fact he was the only Timurid Prince under the tutorship of Kulal family to have developed a conscience.
While Ulugh Beg was still in Amir Kalan’s tutorship, he took him to the site of Maragheh observatory as part of his education. After Ulugh Beg founded a madrasa at Samarkand he requested the aging scholar to take charge, which he politely declined and advised him to concentrate on scientific studies at the madrasa and in lieu with the aim select scholars with such expertise for the said job. Ulug Beg complied but on his insistence he delivered lectures on Islam at the madrasa from time to time. Amir Kalan authored number of books and treatises on religion and mathematics.
