American prisoners of war

There are no known alive American prisoners of war, although there are more than 83,000 members of the armed forces still missing in action. There are currently no American prisoners of war from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Several congressional investigations have looked into the possibility of living prisoners of war from the Vietnam War, culminating with the largest and most thorough, the United States Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs of 1991-1993 led by Senators John Kerry, Bob Smith, and John McCain.
