Allan "Al" De Genova was a five-term Park Board Commissioner for the City of Vancouver, British Columbia. He was first elected in 1993, and subsequently re-elected in 1996, 1999, 2002, and 2005. He was a candidate for the Vision Vancouver Mayoral Nomination in 2008 and was defeated by Gregor Robertson. Background De Genova is the first generation son of an Italian father and Swiss/Italian mother, and grew up in South Vancouver. He runs a successful real estate business in the city. He and his wife Wendy have been married for twenty-seven years and have raised three children together. Park Board Commission De Genova was a five-term park board commissioner. During his tenure his work led to: * Major fundraising project to restore Stanley Park after the devastating storm * Saving and Renovating Nat Bailey Stadium * Rebuilding of Sunset Community Centre * Creation of Hastings Park Italian Gardens * Refurbishment of Victory Square He also served as Park Board liaison to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and Hastings Park Working Committee. He was also Advisor to the Vancouver Chinatown Merchants' Association. Party Switching In 2005 De Genova was elected as an NPA candidate to the Vancouver Park Board. However in May 2006 Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan suspended De Genova from the NPA caucus. De Genova briefly acted as an independent before switching to the Vision Vancouver party in 2008. After losing the Vision Vancouver mayoral nomination race to Gregor Robertson in 2008, De Genova endorsed the NPA candidate Peter Ladner in the general election. Mayoral Candidacy He announced his bid for the Mayoral nomination of Vision Vancouver on March 19, 2008. He was endorsed by former Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell. He ran against Raymond Louie and Gregor Robertson and placed third. In 2012, he was presented the Queen Elizabeth the Second Diamond Jubilee Medal (QDJM) for his outstanding contributions to first responders and injured members of the Canadian Armed Forces. In 2014, DeGenova was presented the Lieutenant Governor's (of British Columbia) Community Achievement Award at Government House in Victoria on 29 April.
