Ali Powers

Born Alastair Robert William Powers, on the 25th August 1979. 'Ali' first came to public attention with his publication in Mam Tor Publishing's award winning graphic novel anthology Event Horizon, 'The Wormcast' a tale of globalisation, time travel, genetics and true love. Ali Powers which is an anagram of Wail Prose, has been described as a multitasking artist, writing music, as well as acting, and making films himself.

2008 saw him produce the vanity book, 'Vatica'. Which if the book is to be believed the title of which came to him in a dream. The word meant 'To be able to speak the universal language in your native tongue'. The word Vatica is not in the Oxford English dictionary, but the word Vatic is, it means 'prophet, poet or seer.'

As an author and artist, he seems to surround himself with self conjured prophecies, creating a myth as much as the life story of an artist? Whether these are to be believed. He has seen an Angel in Angel Mead in Ware, Hertfordshire, England, and has seen the Devil in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. But this myth making sometimes includes more mundanity, like why he has an arrow tattoo on his right arm, this apparently is because, he used to call a swimming pool a 'BLAH', and when he saw the sea for the first time he point and said 'BIG BLAH'. He seems to want to capture a mystical synificance in modernity, saying he was "born in the year of the walkman" instead of 1979? His artwork is inspired by such a cross polination of the mythic and the modern, like the piece 'ctrl alt delete', created for Alexis Dos Santos film Unmade Beds, where we see a photocopied figure made from the nutrional information of a crisp packet, standing on a ground completely made up from ctrl alt delete keys, the figure carries a book 'How it works', where two boys are being shown how an early motorcar works. The sky is fractured with black clouds made from bowler hat wearing gas masked demons, he poses the question of to 'modern' age of spirituality, does the figure have a halo, or is he standing in front of the sun?

July 2008 saw him finish his 12th album, releasing all 12 since 2004.

Currently he appears to be in acting mode, which all started when he was 9, for local amateur dramatics society, 'The Thundridge Player'. Now working with the likes of the BBC award winning 'little circle productions', 'archie mills' and 'trash this room'. He is not a stranger to film, having made various youtube films, like 'thomas the chav engine', 'the real dan brown'.
