Alex Deans (born c. 1997) is a Canadian high school innovator and leader, best known for his scientific and community outreach work. Background At the age of 12, he created a novel navigation aid for the visually impaired, and won second place worldwide at the 2014 Intel International Science Fair (IISEF) in Los Angeles as a member of Team Canada. In addition, he won the Platinum Award for Best Intermediate Project in Canada at the national science fair in 2013. He was a keynote speaker at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind's annual fundraiser in Sarnia, “Dining in the Dark” in 2014. As a pianist and guitarist, Deans was awarded the “Medal for Excellence” for the highest piano mark in Ontario. He represented Canada at the 2011 International Children’s Games in Kelowna, B.C. at age 13. As of August 2014, he is a Grade 11 IB student in Windsor, Ontario. Deans is spearheading a youth volunteerism campaign, “Project IMPACT”, aiming to involve students in city-wide initiatives as Prime Minister of Student Council at Académie Ste Cécile International School. He works with city leaders to engage and empower youth in the community, and is advocating for cancer awareness across southern Ontario through the Canadian Cancer Society's Youth Troop. Deans serves on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee, representing over 40,000 students from more than 20 secondary schools and the University of Windsor. Deans has spoken about his scientific and outreach work on Radio Canada, CTV News, CBC Windsor, Gen Y Inc. and The Windsor Star.
