Adriano Narciso Antonio Varnier (born 24 December 1989) is an Australian born Italian footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Portuguese club Boavista F.C.
Early life
Adriano was born in Darlinghurst, Sydney spending his early years growing up in the Inner West of Sydney. He attended Santa Maria del Monte Primary School, Strathfield and later St Patrick's College, Strathfield winning numerous accolades for his sporting performances, most notably in Cricket and Association Football.
Football career
Adriano Varnier’s early football career was done plying his trade in the State Leagues of NSW, notably with Blacktown Spartans FC after trials with Udinese Calcio and U.S. Triestina Calcio were unsuccessful. He later moved on to playing with Mt Druitt Town Rangers whilst being apart of a training squad in the inaugural year of A-League National Youth League competition with Sydney FC in 2008. In the early part of 2009 he joined APIA Leichhardt Tigers at the Torneo di Viareggio, attracting interest from a number of clubs after some impressive performances at the youth tournament against Queens Park Rangers and Inter Milan. It was after the tournament Adriano went on trail with Norwich City F.C under the eyes of then first team coach Ian Crook, unfortunately breaking his hand forcing his return to Australia.
At the start of the 2009/2010 season Adriano moved to Europe in order to pursue a professional contract and improve his game again going back to trail with U.S. Triestina Calcio. At Triestina, he was unable to agree to terms, with a number of clubs interested in his signature at the time.
Varnier chose to move to FC Koper at the start of 2009/2010 season, where he spent 2 seasons, winning the Slovenian PrvaLiga and Slovenian Supercup in 2010.
However, after an illness in the family, Varnier returned to Australia in 2011 that precipitated a brief hiatus from the game after another unsuccessful trail with A-League side Melbourne Victory along side Dean Bouzanis.
Varnier then signed with Granville Rage for the 2012 NSW Super League season to maintain match fitness, before signing with former European giants Boavista FC for the 2012-13 season, whose squad included notable former Portuguese internationals Petit, Nuno Frechaut and former Senegalese international Fary Faye as the club mobilised for an ambitious promotion campaign following relegation due to the irregularities and financial debts.
