The Build Brighton Hackspace (abbreviated BB) is a non-profit hackerspace in Brighton, UK, established in 2009. Founding The group was formed by Emily Toop on 15th August 2009 at a meeting at The Skiff, Brighton, after discussion on the Brighton New Media and Robot Brighton mailing lists. The hackspace was founded upon the leasing of a room at The Skiff. By 2010 the hackspace outgrew this location Organisational status BuildBrighton - the incorporated company associated with the Build Brighton Hackspace - is a UK Limited By Guarantee (not-for-profit). Its current directors are Mike Pountney, Toby Cole, and Barney Livingston. Facilities Brighton Hackspace facilities include a laser cutter, printer/plotter, PCB etching tools, pillar drill, multiple soldering stations. Themes Like most hackspaces, Build Brighton began with roots in digital new media, expanding into low-capital cost electronics projects, such as the ubiquitous Arduino. These activities still continue as part of the growing maker culture and the resurgence of hobbyist electronics in recent years. Brighton has also expanded its scope beyond this and supported outreach programmes for those less embedded in the scene, particularly children. Themes have included food science, soldering for children and welding, with inspirational maker Tim Hunkin. Projects * Build Brighton was a finalist in the 2011 Great Global Hackspace Challenge, a world-wide competition organised by Mitch Altman and Element14. This was achieved with their Phonicubes prototype, a toy designed for under-7s to learn spelling based on the Phonics system. * Build Brighton were the organisers of the Brighton Mini Maker Faire in 2011 and 2012.
