Adele Carles is a solicitor and a Greens candidate for the Electoral district of Fremantle, in Western Australia.
She was briefly tipped to defeat Attorney-General and Health Minister Jim McGinty at the 2008 state election, polling around 30% of the vote.
History Carles was the spokesperson for Save South Beach, a campaign to prevent development of Fremantle's Southern industrial zone from development by Stockland. The group argued that the building site was poisoned with lead, and won a Supreme Court case arguing for the right to be consulted. The group claims that over 25 families have evacuated the area, and that they have collected over 3000 signatures against the development.
In 2005, Carles ran as an independent in the district of Fremantle, polling 5.8% of the primary vote..
In 2008, Carles was preselected by the Australian Greens to run in the same seat, where she polled around 29% of the vote, marginally less than the contending Liberal candidate Brian Christie. At certain points during the vote count she was polling at 10% higher than Christie, which would mean that Christie's votes would be distributed between Carles and McGinty. Since the Liberal party often instructs voters to place the ALP last, this would have given Carles a strong chance of winning the seat, the first time the Australian Greens have ever won a seat in a general election.
