Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research

The Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research (APCR) is a national medical specialty society. APCR Members are physicians who practice pharmaceutical medicine, work as physician investigators, serve as consultants, or provide academic leadership in clinical research.
History
The Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research began as the medical section of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PMA). In 1993 when PMA was reorganized as the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) to concentrate on advocacy, the medical section broke away to become the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP), an independent professional organization. Membership eligibility was expanded to include physicians who engaged in clinical research in academia, government, and medical practice, and, within a few years, physicians from outside of the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. In 2005, AAPP entered into an affiliation with the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, an organization of physicians, nurses, clinical research coordinators and other individuals based at health research sites. Physician investigators who were members of ACRP became members of AAPP, the name of the organization being changed to Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI). On January 1, 2012, the organization was renamed the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research.
Function
The stated mission of the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research (APCR) is, “To advance medical innovation and public health by providing advocacy, promoting competence and encouraging exchange for and among physicians involved in or affected by clinical research."
APCR has developed a complete curriculum in pharmaceutical medicine and provides annual meetings and courses. Since 2008, APCR has been represented on the Steering Committee of the Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative (CTTI), a partnership between the Food and Drug Administration and Duke University to identify and promote practices that will increase the quality and efficiency of clinical trials. One of the initiative’s goals was to increase clinical trials in the U.S. because the number of trials had fallen 30 percent 2001 - 2007. APCR is also known for its Code of Ethics for the Practice of Pharmaceutical Medicine. Physician investigators have a responsibility to “support the dissemination only of scientifically sound information from clinical trials and other investigations without regard to study outcomes, for the benefit of medicine and science.” APCR holds a seat as a medical specialty society in the American Medical Association House of Delegates. APCR maintains a certification program for Physician Investigators who complete required education, work experience, and an examination covering knowledge and skills related to clinical research. Certified Physician Investigator (CPI) is a renewable time-limited designation accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. The exam is administered by the independent Academy of Clinical Research Professionals which also offers certification programs for clinical research coordinators and clinical research associates.
Organization
The APCR is governed by a board and officers elected by the membership.
