Biography
History of the press and specially a history of press in KhyberPakhtunkhawa is an important topic of which very little is known and written. however when we see the history of press in KhyberPakhtunkhawa, we kow about a great number of journalists specially of Peshawar. the city of Peshawar has always remained in the fore front of the many violent and courageous sons who defined British bayonets to up hold the truth and fight for it and die in glory.
Abul Kaif Kaifi Sarhadi was one of these courageous stalwarts produced by this city. The actual name of Kaifi Sahib was Abdus-salam but his pen name was Abul Kaif later on it became Abul Kaifi Kaifi and then Abul Kaif Kaifi Sarhadi.
All the above titles were of Kaifi's selfmade. it is a controversial matter, because the letters published in safeer-e-sukhan shows that these epithets was given by the readers and contributor of safeer-e-sukhan. while the competent journalist and religious leader of peshawar city Maulvi Syed Amir Shah Qadri Husainia says that all the epithets are selfmade by Mr. Kaifi Sahib and adopted from Kaifi Cheria Koti. According to Syed Amir Shah , Kaifi Sahib was very much impressed from kaifi Cheria Koti, therefore he took kaifi from his name. he gives the proof in this regard that Mr. kaifi published biography of Kaifi Cheria Koti, alongwith full page picture in his magzine Safeer-e-Sukhan.
Another proof in this regard was given that before writing his Abul Kaifi Kaifi he wrote his name Abdus-Salam Cheshti and there are some writings published in the contemporary magzine under this name. also according to his son Dr.Fazilat Maab Zafar Kaifi, his father began to write with pen name of Cheshti and Sayfi but later on he adopted the title of Abul Kaif. once when he recited his poem in a mushaira, some of the poets gave him the epithet of "Aqai". and there is alsi a certificate in his documents file in which Deputy Commissioner gave him the epithet of Shair-e-Millat and it was a great reward for Kaifi.People and literary circles also gave him the epithets of "Aiwan-e-Abulkaif", "Jada-e-Abul Kaif", "Abul Majalis.
Famous religious leader Alama Saeed-ud-Din Sher Koti wrote in his essay "Kaifiyat" Kaifi Sahib called by the name of Aqai Abul Kaif but in 1943 when a three day mushaira was held in peshawar and it was attented by the great literary personalities like Sardar Adbur Rub Nishtar, Jigar Murad Abadi and Allama Tajwar Najeeb Abadi.the Allama Tajwar was mcuh entertained by Mr.Kaifi and stated that I not only consider him Abul Kaif Kaifi but Abul Majalis (means father of gathering).
whatever the case was it is fact that very few people of peshawar know the original name Kaifi Sahib. his pen name kaifi was very popular among people, it became the part of his personality and till now after his death it is the identification of his family and it is the part of the names of his sons a family name.
