6minutes is an Australian electronic medical newsletter for doctors. A daily publication, it comprises an open access website (www.6minutes.com.au) and a pdf format email newsletter that is sent free of charge to 15,000 Australian doctors. 6minutes is aimed primarily at GPs, but is also read by specialists, other health professionals, as well as people in government and industry with an interest in health. It is supported by pharmaceutical and medical recruitment advertisements. Origins It was founded in 2007 by Dr Kerri Parnell, a Sydney GP, and Michael Woodhead, both of whom previously worked as medical journalists and editors at the weekly print magazine Australian Doctor. The parent company of both publications is Reed Elsevier, a B2B publisher that also publishes titles such as New Scientist and The Lancet. The head office is in Chatswood, Sydney. 6minutes was created to take medical publishing into the Web 2.0 era, by publishing in real time, including blogs and instant comment feedback and a high degree of interactivity. It covers a mix of clinical news and coverage of medicopolitics, finance and human interest stories for doctors. 6minutes also focuses on new developments in social media, e-health and medical technology. The name 6minutes is based on the stereotype of '6-minute' (i.e. quick turnaround) medicine, and unlike the bulky print weekly and monthly medical publications, is designed to be read in six minutes.
