4th and 8

4th and 8 is the name used for a famous play on Sunday, December 29th, 2013, during the last week of the 2013-14 NFL regular season. The play was the 3rd successful 4th down conversion of a series during the fourth quarter of a divisional season game between the visiting Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
The 2013-14 NFC North divisional title came down to the Week 17 game between the Green Bay Packers (Record: 7-7-1) and Chicago Bears (Record: 8-7). Both the Packers and Bears were coming off losses the week before to the Steelers and Eagles requiring both teams to play into week 17 for the division title.
The Drive
The drive began on the GB 13 yard line with 6:24 on the clock. The first set of downs comprised of both a run play and pass play to RB Eddie Lacy leading to a 3rd and 1. Even though there was potential for a challenge to get the 1st down, Mike McCarthy opted to instead put FB John Kuhn in where he would be able to jump into the pile for the few inches and a fresh set of downs. Six plays and 21 yards later, the Packers were left to another 4th and 1 at the 2:00 warning. QB Aaron Rodgers threw a quick short pass for 6 yards to WR Jordy Nelson for the conversion.
Following an incomplete pass intended for TE Andrew Quarless, Eddie Lacy rushed for 2 yards bringing up a 3rd and 8. After another incomplete pass, this time intended for WR Jordy Nelson, the Packers were left facing a third 4th down conversion on the drive. 4th and 8 began with 0:46 left in the game. While in formation, FB John Kuhn called out protection audibles. The Bears pass rush threatened to collapse the pocket, but the Packers managed to pick up the blitz, led by a key block on Bears DE Julius Peppers by Kuhn allowing Aaron Rodgers to roll off of left tackle. WR Randall Cobb escaped behind a confused Bears secondary setting up a 48 yard pass for a TD putting Green Bay in the lead 33-28. The Packers failed the 2pt conversion.
