At around 2 a.m. May 22, 2021, gunfire erupted outside of the Monarch nightclub in downtown Minneapolis, killing 2 and wounding 8. One of those killed was one of the two shooters exchanging gunfire with each other. The shooting occurred at the 300 block of 1st Avenue North. The victims consisted of five men and five women. Two men were standing on a sidewalk in a crowded area, got into a verbal confrontation, pulled out guns, and then gunfire erupted. A 23-year-old Bloomington man would later be arrested. The shooting came after a chaotic time in Minnesota involving protests, riots, and a surge of violence.
