The 2011 Cowboys Classic was the 3rd edition of this event and featured the Oregon Ducks of the Pac-12 Conference and the LSU Tigers of the SEC and was played on September 3, 2011 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This became official on September 7, 2010 when officials from both the University of Oregon and Louisiana State University announced that Oregon and LSU would open the season at the 2011 Cowboys Classic at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. This will be the 4th time LSU and Oregon have played each other and the 1st time they have played each other since 1977, when LSU dominated Oregon, winning 56-17 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This was scheduled to be both teams 1st trip to Cowboys Stadium but since LSU got invited to the 2011 Cotton Bowl Classic against Texas A&M, it will be LSU's 2nd game to Cowboys Stadium marking their 2nd straight game at that stadium and Oregon's 1st game at Cowboys Stadium. Game Summary LSU would get off to a hot start as they would force a three-and-out on Oregon's 1st possession and Drew Alleman would hit a 44-yd Field Goal to give LSU an early 3-0 lead. After both teams forced a three-and-out on each other's next possessions, Rob Beard would make a 29-yd Field Goal to tie the game at 3-3. Oregon would force a three-and-out on LSU's next possession and then, Rob Beard would make a 30-yd Field Goal to give Oregon a 6-3 lead after one quarter of football. LSU would strike quickly in the 2nd quarter as Kenjon Barner would fumble on a punt return and Tyrann Mathieu would recover the fumble and return it three yards for the touchdown but Drew Alleman missed the extra point and LSU would b up 9-6. LSU's defense would remain strong as Darron Thomas would throw an interception and i would be intercepted by Tharold Simon. LSU would not take advantage of that interception as Oregon would force a three-and-out on them on their next possession. Oregon would get something going on their next possession as LaMichael James would have a 3-yd touchdown run to give Oregon a 13-9 lead. LSU would strike back on their next possession as Jarrett Lee would have a 10-yd pass to Rueben Randle to give LSU a 16-13 lead heading into halftime. LSU would be forced to punt on their 1st possession of the 3rd Quarter and after both teams forced a three-and-out on each other's next possessions, De'Anthony Thomas would fumble and Eric Reid would recover the fumble. LSU would take advantage of that fumble as Michael Ford had a 5-yd touchdown run to give LSU a 23-13 lead. De'Anthony Thomas would fumble the ball again on the kickoff return and LSU would take advantage again as Spencer Ware had a 1-yd touchdown run to give LSU a 30-13 lead. LSU would force a three-and-out on Oregon's next possession as the 3rd Quarter would conclude with LSU ahead 30-13. LSU would strike first in the 4th quarter as Drew Alleman would hit a 32-yd Field Goal to give LSU a 33-13 lead. Oregon would strike back on their next possession as Darron Thomas would have a 8-yd pass to Josh Huff to cut the LSU lead to 33-20. Oregon would force a three-and-out on each other's next possessions and then, Oregon would turn the ball over on downs. Michael Ford would have a 16-yd run on LSU's next possession to give LSU a 40-20 lead. De'Anthony Thomas would have a 4-yd touchdown run on Oregon's next possession to cut the LSU lead to 40-27 but it would be too late as LSU would recover an onside kick to seal a 40-27 win over Oregon.
