Garib Nagar - a slum area adjoins the Bandra East railway station in Mumbai was completely gutted out after a major fire broke out at the area on Friday, Mar 4 2011. Sources reported that more than 11 people are severely injured. The report stated that nine people are injured and have been rushed to Bhabha hospital. Fire destroyed more than 500 shanties. Child actor Rubina Ali, who featured in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire has lost her home in the major fire including her memories and awards of Slumdog Millionaire, that gutted several shanties in suburban Bandra. Earlier in June 2009, similar fire was broken out there Bandra near Behrampada area. Background The fire department is still to predict the cause of the fire even after few days of the incident. According to officials, the fire started from the centre of the plot at 7.45 pm on March 4 night and spread to the north and south because of multiple cylinder blasts. They also described the blaze as one of the biggest in the city in the last two years. More than 30 fire engines and 10 water tankers had been pressed into service. The train services had also been affected due to fire.More than 500 huts have believed to be destroyed. Response Maharashtra government announced an interim relief of Rs 1000 each for those who have been rendered homeless in last night's blaze in a Bandra slum colony along the railway line. MaharashtraChief minister Prithviraj Chavan visiting Garib Nagar on Sunday(March 5) announced a compensation of Rs 25,000 to each family whose home was reduced to ashes in Friday's fire at Garib Nagar slum. CM has also set up a committee to look at the possibility of providing permanent rehabilitation to the victims. Western Railway on the other hand said that the portion of the middle Foot-Over-Bridge (FOB), which was damaged in the blaze, would be set right in the next three months. MNS chief Raj Thackeray alleged that the fire in Garib Nagar slums was a "conspiracy". He also targeted child actor Rubina saying, "Rubina was provided a free house by the government after the success of the movie, why was she staying in the slums?" Refences
