1988 Aeroflot Tu-134 accident

The 1988 accident with Aeroflot Tu-134 occurred on 31 December during a domestic flight from Kaliningrad to Odessa. During the accident the aircraft reached the highest landing speed among all aircraft, at . Due to damaging airflow created by high speed the aicraft approached the runway with unextended flaps and spoilers. The aircraft eventually skidded off the runway, although the spoilers were extended during the touchdown and thrust reversal was deployed.
Circumstances
The aircraft descended at inappropriately high speed of .<ref name="svavia"/> The crew ignored the high speed alert, which sounded at the altitudes of 7,500, 4,400 and 3,000 meters.<ref name="svavia"/> At the altitude of 900 meters and the speed of captain L. Krantov ordered to lower the landing gear, while the maximum allowable speed for lowering the gear was .<ref name="svavia"/> The landing took place at the speed of , while the maximum speed allowed for the main gear tires was .<ref name="svavia"/> The thrust reversal was used until complete stop of the aircraft.
The accident was caused by several factors. Those included ignorance of pre-landing checklist and LOM's descent scheme, as well as undeployed high-lift devices.<ref name="svavia"/> The landing weight and center of gravity of the aircraft were normal.<ref name="svavia"/>
