The 109th Street and Broadway Avenue fire, at 300 West 109th Street, at Broadway, was an eight alarm fire that left thirty-three people injured. It began on March 11, 1999, at approximately 01:00. Of the 33 people that were hurt, 4 were firefighters - one of which suffered a heart attack. The fire began in a Mexican restaurant at ground level, and shot up through the air shaft, reportedly skipping numerous floors. The building, the Manhasset, which lacked fire escapes, was scaled by firefighters with the help of aerial ladders. Some firefighters ran through ten floors internally. The Manhasset was built in 1905.
