.sport is a proposed generic top-level domain (gTLD) for the sport community. An official proposal to ICANN has not been made at this stage.
The main goals of .sport is to improve the visibility of sports related web sites on the Internet.
The proposed Request for Proposal for new TLDs will be brought before the ICANN meeting in late 2008 with the review and approval process taking several months.
Rationale
According to its proponents the rationale behind the proposed TLD is two-fold. Unsponsored generic top level domains like .com are too generic by design. Sponsored TLDs are too narrow by design. They focus on a very limited community and sometimes in a specific language (.travel).
There has to be a third way for a top level domain that can, at the same time, be open to all and bring the feeling of being part of a well identified, global community. Further, "sport" is a word used in many languages, which makes it likely to appeal to a large community.
